I love dessert, so I’m always looking for healthy ways to add it to my day. One of my favorite ways is a quickie fruit-based ice cream, so I thought about what other flavor combos would work well.

It turns out that cantaloupe, banana, and lemon make a delicious frozen dessert treat, aka cantaloupe ice cream! Enter this delicious healthy dessert, one of my favorite cantaloupe recipes.

Ingredients

You’ll need just a few ingredients to make cantaloupe ice cream:

Bananas: When overripe bananas are frozen and blended, they become so creamy!

Cantaloupe: What would cantaloupe ice cream be without cantaloupe?

Almond milk: Note that the banana melon recipe calls for just a little almond milk, which makes this dessert lighter than many ice creams made with both milk and cream. The ice cream is also vegan because it doesn’t contain any dairy milk.

Lemon juice and lemon zest: These ingredients add a nice tang to the ice cream.

Pistachios: Once I had my base for this cantaloupe dessert, I thought about what food would make the best topping. I chose pistachios because they’re full of filling healthy fats, protein, and fiber—so I chopped them up for a crunchy topping.

Recipe FAQ

What fruit do you put in homemade ice cream?

You can use any fruit that you’d like! The key is to peel and freeze it before adding it to an ice cream recipe. Overripe bananas work very well because they’re naturally sweet.

Other fruits that you can add, in addition to bananas, include cantaloupe, blueberries, and cherries.

How much fruit do you put in homemade ice cream?

Every recipe is different, but this fruit ice cream recipe calls for 1 ½ bananas and 2 ½ cups cantaloupe. This amount of fruit yields 4 ½-cup servings.

Can dogs have cantaloupe ice cream?

Yes, but you’ll want to alter the recipe slightly. A good combination is 2 cups frozen cantaloupe and 2 Tablespoons plain yogurt. Dogs love frozen treats!
