Ingredients

You only need five ingredients to make this banana nutmeg smoothie. The ingredients are very flexible—if you don’t have them on hand, most can be substituted for something else.

Grape juice: Every smoothie needs a liquid base, and this one is bursting with antioxidants. You’ll want to choose 100 percent grape juice to avoid any added sugar. You can substitute in any type of plant milk, like almond milk or oat milk.

Hemp seed butter: I love using hemp seed butter for its protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Plus, it’s super tasty. If you don’t have hemp seed butter, try almond butter or sun butter instead.

Skyr: Skyr is an Icelandic cultured dairy product. It’s pretty similar to strained yogurt and it has a mild flavor. Opt for plain skyr—I recommend the Icelandic Provisions brand. In this step, you could replace the skyr with Greek or plant-based yogurt.

Nutmeg: Add just a dash of nutmeg for a delicious warm flavor.

Banana: Last but not least, you’ll need a frozen banana for this smoothie! It adds flavor, creaminess, vitamins, and minerals to the recipe. Before freezing the banana, you’ll want to slice it into small pieces, as this makes it easier to blend.

Blend the ingredients together until smooth. To make it thicker, you can add a couple of ice cubes. If it’s not quite thin enough, you can blend in extra juice or liquid.

Then, serve the smoothie! It is a good idea to serve the smoothie immediately, otherwise, it will lose its texture and become liquidy. Add any toppings that you like, such as a drizzle of nut butter, cacao nibs, a little granola, or some chia seeds.

Recipe FAQ

What spices are good in smoothies?

Spices with warm flavors are perfect for smoothies—they complement the naturally sweet flavors of fruit very well. Nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and ginger are great spices to mix into smoothies.

How do you make a smoothie without ice?

It’s easy to make a smoothie without ice! Simply add in frozen fruit instead. In this banana nutmeg smoothie, I used a frozen banana instead of ice.

Using frozen banana or other fruits brings a smooth consistency to smoothies that you don’t get with ice. However, if you prefer to use ice, it certainly won’t ruin the smoothie and can help make it thicker.

Does the banana need to be frozen in this recipe?

You can use a banana that is not frozen, just keep in mind that it may not result in the creamy texture that you’re looking for.

If you use a fresh banana, it’s a good idea to add a few ice cubes to obtain the creaminess and cold temperature you’re looking for.
