Why Plum Jam is So Easy to Make

One of my favorite things about summer is entertaining. I love having people over and serving them healthy, delicious food. And I like to impress them with my hostess skills. Of course, during the current coronavirus pandemic, my only get togethers are via Zoom, but a girl can dream.

I do like to have my healthy snacks on hand, though. And here’s a secret: I really don’t like to spend a ton of time in the kitchen for these gatherings.

That’s where this brie cheese with onion jam appetizer comes into the picture. It’s super tasty and impressive (after all, how often can you say, “I made that jam!”) and ready in minutes.

That’s right. You don’t need any fancy equipment like hot, sterilized pans with water that comes to a full, rolling boil or even a large bowl.

This jam is so easy to put together. You don’t have to do anything complicated like add balsamic vinegar, worry about boiling water, skim off any foam, or even worry about removing any pits from fresh plums.

Plus, since I bet you’ll eat it pretty quickly, you don’t have to worry about lids and rings, jelly jars or mason jars, and canning.

Ready for the Cheese Pairing?

Using a wedge of brie as a base is healthier than going with a puff pastry baked brie. Don’t have any brie on hand? The jam also pairs well with Camembert, goat cheese, blue cheese, feta cheese, or even a cream cheese spread. Or top it on top of cheese balls or even vanilla bean ice cream!

If you love jam recipes, you’ll love this tasty app. The best part? It won’t take more than 20 minutes to make.

Why Prunes are Nutritious

I’m really a fan of the cheese-and-jam combo—it reminds me of being in France! But a lot of jams contain a lot of sugar. And if you look at the ingredient lists of those jams, sugar is often the first ingredient.

So I set out to make a healthier version. Enter this onion jelly.

I used prunes and prune juice as the base of this plum jam. When it comes to prune nutrition, there’s a lot to know. If you didn’t know, eating prunes can help prevent bone loss.

This is super important for lowering your risk of osteoporosis! Prunes for osteoporosis prevention? Absolutely.

And prune juice, because it’s a good source of fiber, helps you maintain healthy digestion. I love sweet-and-savory combos, so I added in onions cooked in low-sodium vegetable broth.

You can serve this brie appetizer with sliced apples or pears—or try mini toasts. I think you’ll really enjoy this easy prune spread appetizer recipe.

When I made this prune jelly recipe, I used a small amount of sugar to sweeten it. It doesn’t contain any other sources of added sugar, such as brown sugar.
