Why I love prune jam
One of my favorite things about summer is entertaining. I love having people over and serving them healthy, delicious food. And I like to impress them with my hostess skills.
I do like to have my healthy snacks on hand, though. And here’s a secret: I really don’t like to spend a ton of time in the kitchen for these gatherings.
That’s where this brie cheese with prune jam appetizer comes into the picture. It’s super tasty and impressive (after all, how often can you say, “I made that jam!”) and ready in minutes.
That’s right. You don’t need any fancy equipment like hot, sterilized pans with water that comes to a full, rolling boil or even a large bowl.
This jam is so easy to put together. You don’t have to do anything complicated like add balsamic vinegar, worry about boiling water, skim off any foam, or even worry about removing any pits from fresh plums.
Plus, since I bet you’ll eat it pretty quickly, you don’t have to worry about lids and rings, jelly jars or mason jars, and canning.

Ingredients
I’m really a fan of the cheese-and-jam combo—it reminds me of being in France! But a lot of jams contain a lot of sugar. And if you look at the ingredient lists of those jams, sugar is often the first ingredient. My plum jelly recipe does not!
You only need a handful of ingredients to make this healthier prune jam recipe:
Onion and low-sodium vegetable broth: I love sweet-and-savory combos, so I added in onions cooked in low-sodium vegetable broth.
Prune juice and prunes: I used prunes and prune juice as the base of this plum jam. When it comes to prune nutrition, there’s a lot to know. If you didn’t know, eating prunes can help prevent bone loss. This is super important for lowering your risk of osteoporosis!
And prune juice, because it’s a good source of fiber, helps you maintain healthy digestion.
Sugar: When I made this prune jelly recipe, I used a small amount of sugar to sweeten it. It doesn’t contain any other sources of added sugar.
Brie: You can serve this appetizer on top of brie, with sliced apples or pears, or with mini toasts.

Step-by-step instructions
Making prune jam is super easy. To start, cook onions in vegetable broth over medium-high heat in a medium pan. Heat until onions are translucent and most of liquid is dissolved, stirring occasionally, about 5-6 minutes.
Once onions are cooked, add prune juice, prunes, and sugar to same pan. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, 4-6 minutes.
Stir frequently when liquid begins to absorb quickly, until most of liquid is absorbed.
Once prune jam has cooled, use as a topping for the brie. Serve the brie with jam with apple slices and mini toasts, if desired.

Recipe FAQ
You have so many options! You can go with cheese, mini toasts, or apple and pear slices. Using a wedge of brie as a base is healthier than going with a puff pastry baked brie.
Don’t have any brie on hand? The jam also pairs well with Camembert, goat cheese, blue cheese, feta cheese, or even a cream cheese spread. Or top it on top of cheese balls or even vanilla bean ice cream!
Less than 20 minutes! Unlike many other jam recipes, prune jam takes just minutes to whip up on the stovetop.
It is! If you follow a vegan diet, make sure to choose a vegan cane sugar––or opt for beet sugar, which is vegan.

Looks delicious
Thank you so much! Enjoy.
I was wondering what to do with my leftover prunes previously used in a cream sauce. I’ll try it but I’m thinking a more salty cheese.
